National System Planning for Protected Area

     · 1998 ~ Davey, A.G. ~ IUCN

     · Proposed “system planning” as the best practice framework for conservation, normalizing the

goal for conservationists to focus on conserving ecosystems at macro-ecosystem to maintain

        functionality.

     · Created new categories that determined the management objectives on a numerical ranking

system per region. For example, different objectives were designated for a “wilderness” area

than a “managed resource protected area.”

     · Cardinal report from an initiative taken by the IUCN aimed at improving land management

planning and practice in the private and public sector.

     · Restructures the ideal image of land conservation around ecologically conscious strategies.

Resilient and Connected Landscapes

     · 2016 ~ Anderson et al. ~ The Nature Conservancy

     · Original text is accessible through the URL above. Listed under “Latest Reports” section of webpage.

     · Analyses resilient and connected landscapes for each geological region in the United States.

     · Specifies which locations in the United States will fortify the best mitigation practices against climate change.

     · An updated framework for the priorities of private and public conservation groups.

crisis by conserving the lands it identifies.

The Futures of Privately Protected Areas

     · 2014 ~ Stolton, S., K.H. Redford, and N. Dudley ~ IUCN.

     · The original text is accessible by following the URL above, it is the first title under the “Link” section of the webpage.

     · IUCN defines “private” broadly as “individuals, nonprofit and charitable trusts, religious groups,

ecotourism companies and large corporations… amongst the many types of institutions involved.”

     · Besides being a symbol of success for private conservation, this report attempts to amalgamate the

operational definitions private conservation actors abide by.

     · This report was a major step toward centralizing the agenda of private conservation as an international effort.

An Introduction to Conservation Easements in the United States: A Simple Concept and a Complicated Mosaic of Law

     · 2015 ~ University of Utah College of Law Research Paper No. 130

     · A scholarly exploration of the principles of law that govern conservation easements and the

conditional policies that manage “funding, tax treatment, enforcement, modification, [perpetuity],

        and termination of easements.”

     · Dissects the history and development of obtaining conservation easements.

     · Examines relevant case law and historic examples of conflicts and controversies surrounding conservation easements.
