Global Fisheries- A Brief Review
· 2008 ~ Daniel Pauly ~ Journal of Biological Reasearch
· Highlights the significant increase in global catches in fisheries after World War 2
· This peaked in the later 1980’s and then declined because of overfishing globally, leading to an
overall depletion of fish stocks and ecosystem damage.
· Four main factors that mask the fisheries crisis: (1) overreporting by China, (2) FAO combining
declining fisheries catches with increasing aquaculture production, (3) increases seafood impots
from developed countries, and (3) denial by governments and industry funded scientists.
· 2019 ~ Xianghong Lin, et al. ~ Science Direct
· Underscores the role of S&T in China's marine fisheries industry transformation, driven by policy
initiatives such as the 13th Five-Year Plan for Fishery Science and Technology Development, which
aims for S&T contributions to exceed 63% by 2020.
· China is important here because one third of global fish consumption can be attributed to China.
· Authors examine how S&T contributes significantly to both the economic development and
sustainable management of marine fisheries, they aim to enhance efficiency and conservation
through technological advancements like selectronic telemetry and species monitoring technologies.
