Small Island Developing States
· UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing
Countries and Small Island Developing States
· “The three geographical regions in which SIDS are located are: the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the
Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Sea (AIS). SIDS were recognized as a special case both for
their environment and development at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development
held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The aggregate population of all the SIDS is 65 million, slightly less than 1% of
the world’s population, yet this group faces unique social, economic, and environmental challenges.”
Small Island Developing States
· "...a United Nations (UN)-recognised international organisation established in 2015, with all the
rights and privileges for addressing climate change, resilience, and energy security in small islands.
SIDS DOCK represents 32 small islands and low-lying developing states across the globe and is so
named because it is designed as a “DOCKing station” to connect the energy sector in SIDS with the
global markets for finance and sustainable energy technologies. Belize is the Host Country for the
SIDS DOCK Secretariat.
